I think you shouldn't set your expectation based on friend's comment. What if your other friend say must get 100 marks leh? then you and your girl is going to be stressed.

Marks isn't everything as long as she learned the concept and done her best in school and exam. Of cos' when come to exam we want our children to pass loh but not necessary at least 90 marks.

Take it easy... still a long road for her education...

depends.
if the school is those elite/popular ones of which the standard is higher, expecting 90% is going to make both parents and kids stressful.
if neighbourhood schools of which standard is catering to middle/lower income families (no advantage of tuition or expensive preschool as headstart), if the kid/parent is diligent in revision, expecting 90% and above is expected.
IMO.

why confused.gif
bulk of neighbourhood school's kids come from the neighbouring HDB estates. most of the parents are middle/low income earners and don't have the luxury of sending the kids to P1 preparatory courses or go to expensive MMI/Kinderland/Chilton hse etc etc type of preschool or have enrichment or tuition. a portion of these kids enter P1 with no background in addition or dunno much english. these neighbourhood schools cannot afford to set their papers too high, if not most of the kids will do badly and that will affect their confidence and interest in studies.

i would like to add that in this case, to a certain extend, the results gap between the better ones and the poor ones are pretty wide gap. the poorer ones tend to be because of the poor headstart they have. those with better results tend to be those from privileged backgrounds, but chose the school in phase 2c supp cos they did not succeed in balloting into the more popular sch within the neighbourhood or because the sch is nearest to their home.
IMO.

Kids need to learn frm failure...so if result not that go in P1. I can accept it. And that is where we should encourage them to work better. Let him/her learn from their failure in the lower primary is better than failure in the upper primary.

Hi Tee Pee,
Initially, I kind ofagree with her that P1's paper should be "easy", so I TOT that my gal would have no problem getting all subjects abouve 90, but after going thru her papers, I must admit that it's not like what we have gone thru years ago, there are lots of questions that needs our little ones to ponder before they can ans...so I didn't "blamr" my dd for the results..... no lah. if my other friend say can get 100 marks, I won't agree lah...not everyone is so tok gong!! biggrin.gif

I kind of agree with this. When I saw my dd's maths and Cl paper, I was like..wow.. she can analyse and do some of the questions leh.. so proud of her, but of course, she is very very very careless in her work, n well, that cost her lots of marks. As for cl, she is gd with HYPY, but can't recognise chinese characters, haiz.... bye2.gif so there goes her marks again! waiting.gif

That's how my dh felt also, I am just worried that if she is lag behind in P1, might be difficult to keep up with class after that... sad.gif

Thanks for all the replies friends.... biggrin.gif
Think I shouldn't have gotten so stress up over dd's result. She actually didn't do badly, think my expectation is too high liao... I will definately encourage her to do better for the next exam, yes, agree.gif it's the learning process that is important and not the numbers(marks) that we see.....
sage
DD will be in P1 next year and frens as well as my own sis oso said that at P1-3, kids should be scoring in the high 80s to 90s range if they are to maintain gd grades when they hit the upper pr. That will help set the foundation.

However looking at my niece's exam papers since she was in P1 (now P5) I peng san.

Personally for me, I will look at what is the level average instead of insisting that my kid have to score 90 and above or that 70 or 80 is gd enuf. If the level average is in the 90s and she comes home only with 70+ then that is a big cause for concern.

My niece came home and said she got only 60+ for her maths this time which was a never b4. She usually scores in the 80s. My sis of course thot oh no. But she reserved her judgement until she saw the papers. It was not easy and the level average was 46 over 100. which means that the paper was too tough for the majority of the kids.
lovingkids
I'm glad that during the exam day, my dd1 checked her work. So, she was able to amend those 'silly' mistakes that she mustn't make.. Hence, her scores are overall up to my expectation.. She scored the best for her Chinese exam. Now, my dd1 is reading while I'm typing this & telling me that her teacher mentioned to her that both her English & Math belong to band1... But I'm quite doubtful, did my dd1 listened wrongly.. keke.. anyway, it's just SA1, let's pray hard for our little ones to score better during their SA2..

P1 is not easy for them.. but easy for us de...

Keep it up.. our dear girls & boys...

Your son no SA1 har?

As for KC std, not sure about higher primary levels, but for P1 not so challenging, perhaps like some parents say, SA1 papers are usually easier to score, SA2 papers will be more difficult. As for CL, I feel the paper is really quite easy, they are not tested to write a single Chinese character, even my gal who hates Chinese, told me after the test that the paper is easy peasy, and true enough, she score full marks for her written paper.

hi appleberry,
how are you?
SA2 results out.
Contrary to your comment in bold above, my boy's cohort's average mark (and min. mark) for SA2 is higher than SA1.
Probably cos parents
1. brush up their kid's weak areas after reflecting on SA1's results
2. now more experience already.

Went for the PTM. Overheard a mummy reprimanding her kid for doodling on the exam papers. The kid explained that she had checked 'a hundred' times already. Very cute. My boy also doodled on his paper.

My boy not having SA1 next year. Dunno if it will be a good thing cos that means SA2 is 100% weightage.

Hi fz,

I'm well, thank you smile.gif

I haven't been here for a long time, ha..actually don't even remember making the comment above.

The final marks for her papers are not out yet, she'll probably receive her report card tomorrow. We only have the marks for the written papers for English & Chinese and also full Maths marks.

Yes, the SA2 paper for my girl wasn't more difficult but overall she improved on Maths but her marks in English paper deteriorated. My gal scored lesser marks in her written paper in English and it also didn't help that her SA2 English paper consist of : oral, listening compre, spelling (best of 5 spellings from term 3 & 4), compo writing, authentic tasks, and show & tell, beside written paper. Ha...so many components mean dropping more marks, SA1 only consist of oral, listening compre, spelling & written paper.

Yes, guess you are probably right that the kids brushed up their weak areas after the SA1 results, and was the case for my gal, but I expect her overall Maths results was "pulled down" by her SA1 result. On the other hand, I hope her SA1 english marks will help to "pull up" her overall English result because she did better in her SA1 English paper.

So...it is really difficult to say whether its good or bad to have full 100% weightage on SA2. But we could always use the topical tests results to gauge the kids performance and work on the weaker areas and improved on them.

But not to worry lah, your son is doing well in school, so I believe your son should not have any problems lah.

When is their last day of school this year? Some said already holiday, some said 19Nov is their last day, while my dd1, she said 20Nov... No letter from the school, no written in diary too.
appleberry
Officially, last day should be Nov. 20. But some schools have the speech day or prize giving day on Nov. 20 and only attended by those prize recipients, thus, for those not involved, Nov. 19th will be the last day of school. I think Catholic High already on school holidays since last week. My block is next to Catholic High and have not seen CH students going to school since last Monday.

You could probably call up your girl's school general office to check.

Yes some schools start earlier. My son's last day is 20 Nov but my friend's child started one week ago .... smile.gif

Hi everyone, just curious, what is your expectation of your kid's P1 results?? My friend commented that kids should at least get 90 marks and above coz its very "easy".... wow.gif   Is that the standard?? I am so stressful.... sad.gif My girl is in P1, but didn't get that results leh... blink.gif
*

depends.
if the school is those elite/popular ones of which the standard is higher, expecting 90% is going to make both parents and kids stressful.
if neighbourhood schools of which standard is catering to middle/lower income families (no advantage of tuition or expensive preschool as headstart), if the kid/parent is diligent in revision, expecting 90% and above is expected.
IMO.

why  confused.gif
bulk of neighbourhood school's kids come from the neighbouring HDB estates. most of the parents are middle/low income earners and don't have the luxury of sending the kids to P1 preparatory courses or go to expensive MMI/Kinderland/Chilton hse etc etc type of preschool or have enrichment or tuition. a portion of these kids enter P1 with no background in addition or dunno much english. these neighbourhood schools cannot afford to set their papers too high, if not most of the kids will do badly and that will affect their confidence and interest in studies.

is this ur personal view bleh.gif

i duno how true until i compare the papers bleh.gif bleh.gif
